More Information

In a series of intimate self-portraits, Davis reveals private moments in carefully orchestrated compositions. As both the photographer and subject, Davis uses photography to examine the emotional difficulties arising from being overweight in a culture permeated with an ideal of female thinness. The composition of 'Untitled No. 16', like many in this series, pays homage to Dutch master painting, using natural light to accentuate a soft, appealing color palette and simple interiors. Through her photographs, Davis shows the viewer situations in which she is isolated and vulnerable. Yet, she maintains control of her self-presentation and a keen awareness of the various gazes directed at her.
