Hui Chu Ying, Professor of Printmaking at The University of Akron’s Myers School of Art was commissioned by the Akron Art Museum in 2012 to create a print to be given as gifts to each of the past presidents of the museum as part of the 90th Anniversary celebration. Layering – adding one thing atop another without altering either’s essence – is an important characteristic of Ying’s work. She places handwork over a mechanical process, color over color and image over pattern. In creating these prints for the past presidents, Ying used symbolism to commemorate them – the hands represent giving, the heart symbolizes passion and dedication, and the bird signifies a messenger between the community and the museum. This variable edition combines traditional printmaking, which is rooted in reproducibility, with stencils and drawing, resulting in a one-of-a-kind object.
