Foregrounding quotidian details that often become invisible in the rush of the city, Buffon's drawings and miniatures point out the prosaic charms of urban life. Many of Buffon's works document and memorialize queer communities and places of both social and political significance. The active creation of certain safe spaces is crucial for marginalized communities, and Buffon's meticulous recording of these locations underscores their importance as sites of culture and comradery. Based in Brooklyn, Buffon documented important sites for social justice such as the Stonewall Inn, the site of the genesis of the gay liberation movement. Transporting his usual New York City-based project to Akron, Buffon researched and documented important local institutions, creating a conceptual and geographical bridge between the two communities. This is not only relevant to the population of Akron, but is also a wonderful record of the first iteration of the FRONT Triennial 2018 and the role that the Akron Art Museum played in its success.
