Known for his monumental, unstretched wall works, Alan Shields embellished canvas with colorful threads, beads, and swatches of stitched fabric, creating intricate surfaces. Ignoring traditional gendered divisions between fine art and domestic craft, Shields drew on skills first learned at home on his family's farm in Kansas, using a sewing machine to create drawings in thread. Is this work, mottled washes of acrylic paint suggesting atmosphere and light are contrasted with a playful constellation of brightly colored geometric forms, resulting in a composition that is both intimate and graphic.
