Draw Me a Story

The first art that most children experience is in picture books, and the first reading they do involves reading pictures instead of words. Therefore it’s no surprise that Akron’s school age population can identify an image of Peter, the protagonist of Ezra Jack Keats’s The Snowy Day, plodding through a fresh coating of snow in his bright red snow suit. Draw Me a Story celebrates Keats’s legacy and the power of picture books to promote visual literacy and cultural awareness

Danny Lyon: The Bikeriders

This exhibition presents a dramatic inside look at 1960s biker counterculture. From 1963 – 1967 Danny Lyon not only captured the bikers in photographs, but immersed himself in the lifestyle. Lyon joined the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club, making him a pioneer of the new form of photojournalism where the artist was personally involved with the subject.

The Snowy Day and the Art of Ezra Jack Keats

The Snowy Day and the Art of Ezra Jack Keats is the first major exhibition in the U.S. to pay tribute to award-winning author and illustrator Ezra Jack Keats (1916–1983), whose beloved children’s books include Whistle for Willie, Peter’s Chair, and The Snowy Day, published in 1962. The exhibition features over 80 original works by the artist, from preliminary sketches to final paintings and collages, including examples of Keats’s most introspective but less-known output inspired by Asian art and poetry.

New Artifacts: Works by Brent Kee Young and Sungsoo Kim

New Artifacts pairs works by Cleveland Institute of Art professor and department head Brent Kee Young with works by Sungsoo Kim, an adjunct professor at Cleveland Institute of Art and Kent State University. While Young and Kim employ diverging glassmaking techniques, they share an interest in rediscovering familiar forms, both classical and ordinary, resulting in timeless works of intrigue.

Adolph Gottlieb: Sculptor

A first-generation abstract expressionist painter, Adolph Gottlieb, whose art was central to the development of mid-twentieth century painting in America, was among only three of his colleagues to create both two- and three-dimensional works. Gottlieb’s sculpture is little-known and has rarely been seen in the United States.

The Anniversary Show: Commemorative Art Through the Years

As part of the ongoing celebration of the museum’s 90th anniversary the Corbin Gallery features an exhibition of works commissioned over several decades. The museum has a long history of commissioning artworks by local artists including paintings, photographs, print design, jewelry and pottery to commemorate milestones, anniversaries and special events.

String of Hearts: Photographs by Bea Nettles

The photographs of Bea Nettles often depict the artist's intimate family life, yet they also speak to the broad ideas of what it means to be a mother, teacher and artist, which she describes as her greatest roles. The focus of this exhibition, a survey of the museum's collection of Nettles' photographs, is the artist's use of autobiographical imagery, animated by her experimental process.

Stranger in Paradise: The Works of Reverend Howard Finster

Survey of the works and legacy of Reverend Howard Finster, self-proclaimed “Man of Visions,” in Stranger in Paradise. One of America’s most widely known and prolific self-taught artists, Finster produced over 46,000 works of art before his death in 2001.
