What made the university decide to become an Art Works Business Member of the Akron Art Museum?
The University of Akron strongly believes in supporting our local community. We also see our educational mission as helping our students connect with the world around them. The Akron Art Museum offers our students a unique way to connect with art through its many collections. From realism to impressionism to post-modern art, students are certain to find a style that speaks to them.
What benefit of Art Works Business Membership do you appreciate the most?
In addition to its collections and special exhibitions, the museum offers musical concerts, yoga, book sales and a variety of other events to help people connect. These activities help our university community remain active and learning. Because the museum is free for our students, faculty and staff, they can go back as many times as they want, and they’ll get a different experience each time.
Why do you feel the Akron Art Museum is important for your students, faculty and staff?
The Akron Art Museum is a fabulous resource. There is no right or wrong way to experience the museum or its collections, and we hope that our campus community visits to relax, learn and find inspiration either inside the many exhibition spaces or outside in the beautiful Bud and Susie Rogers Garden. It is important to our university that our campus community feels a deep connection to the City of Akron and the local arts and culture opportunities that exist within and around it.
How has the Akron Art Museum impacted The University of Akron?
Our partnership allows our students, faculty and staff to visit the museum for free by showing a ZipCard. Our employees enjoy this perk as a way to improve their quality of life. Students also tell us they want to experience all that the city offers during their time here, and this partnership is a great selling point!
Are there particular works of art in the collection or current/past events that are special to you?
The Synapse Lectures have been terrific. The focus on the intersection of art with science has challenged our students and faculty to look at how the so-called opposites actually attract, generating innovative ideas. Amazing artists, works and lectures come through the museum every semester.
Do you have a story or memory that you would like to share about the Akron Art Museum?
