Hitler’s economic recovery program included compulsory manual labor for all males and massive public and private construction projects to provide relief from rampant unemployment. Heartfield mocks Hitler’s background as both a house and fine art painter by using the word anschmieren, which means both to daub (apply paint crudely) and to swindle.
