'folding 03' is one of three drawings Lindberg created in tandem with her installation inside green for the exhibition Intersections: Artists Master Line and Space at the Akron Art Museum. The artist first undertook to conceive drawings in concert with her work in three dimensions for an exhibition at Haw Contemporary in Kansas City in 2015. In her folding series, Lindberg determined to use horizontal lines, which are not typical in her work, across an elongated format, to “create a rush of energy that is enhanced by the slight rise and fall of the colored forms in space.” The palette of greens, yellows and blues accenting the range of grays reflects the colors Lindberg employed in inside green, which she chose in response to observing the light qualities in the Akron Art Museum’s Karl and Bertl Arnstein Galleries and to their white oak floors. As is characteristic of her practice, Lindberg scribed the lines using an outsized drawing board that was constructed specifically for her purposes and equipped with a 10-foot parallel bar that allows her “to pull a really long line.” Although the artist uses these architect’s tools, she does not spin her pencil to produce even lines and deliberately distinguishes the starts and ends of each of her many strokes. As a result, the lines touch each other at times or have snags—effects Lindberg embraces but cannot plan.
