More Information

Travis’s mother cultivated many kinds of flowers on the family’s farm in eastern Ohio, and Travis painted flowers from the time he was a student at the Cleveland School of Art in the 1910s. He learned from his teacher, Henry Keller, whose work is also on view in this gallery, to emphasize pattern and color in his paintings. The slinky shapes of the fruits and flowers, the mysterious mountain form to the right and the coarse brushwork in this painting reflect the expressionistic style that Travis developed after an extended stay in Africa in the 1920s.
