This Ohio native's expressive, detailed paintings show the influence of the French Barbizon artists; his landscapes, like theirs, are truthful to detail and use natural light to model and define shapes and forms. Attempts to reproduce atmospheric effects and capture light gave his works an expressive, emotional quality and later provided a point of departure for American Impressionists, such as Willard Metcalf and Childe Hassam.
