Best known for playful, large-scale sculptures such as Inverted Q in the museum’s lobby, Claes Oldenburg is also a superb draughtsman and printmaker. He often uses drawings and prints to work out ideas for sculptures. Related forms and ideas will re-appear over the years in the guise of different objects. This lithograph contains a hint of Akron’s Q, which was produced over a decade later. Monumentalizing everyday objects such as lipsticks, hamburgers and baseball mitts, Oldenburg promotes them from commonplace to cultural symbol.
