This photograph appeared along with A Young Brooklyn Family Going on a Sunday Outing, N.Y.C. in a London Sunday Times Magazine issue devoted to the theme of family. Not long before, Arbus had expressed interest in a pursuing a project she referred to as “Family Album,” which was never realized. In approaching her subjects for this photo-essay, titled “Two American Families,” Arbus acceded to the mother’s request to delay photographing the family until it was warm and they could pose by their pool. In her caption, the photographer commented “I think it’s such an odd photograph, nearly like Pinter, but not quite. . . the parents seem to be dreaming the child and the child seems to be inventing them.”
