Oliveira described himself as “always fascinated with birds, especially falcons and hawks.” He saw birds’ wings as representing freedom and returned to them as subjects again and again. A masterful printmaker as well as a painter and sculptor, the artist created as part of a suite of prints published to commemorate the fifteenth anniversary of the Tamarind Institute, a pioneering center for revitalizing lithography in the United States. Editioned by master printers in Albuquerque, this lithograph, with its title referring to the Acoma Indian pueblo nearby, is characterized by the rich dark tones that surround and envelop the steadfast hawk.
