Jim Goldberg began photographing tenants in San Francisco’s transient hotels in 1977, asking his subjects for their handwritten commentaries on his images. The following year Goldberg turned his attention to affluent residents in their homes, likewise requesting written remarks. Although their dramatically different surroundings document the disparity in his subjects’ incomes, Goldberg captured poignant observations on relationships from both rich and poor households.
