Penny Rakoff's luminous color photographs of urban night scenes depict the real world in a hauntingly surreal way. Knowing that the camera and film interpret artificial light differently than does the human eye, Rakoff seeks out subjects illuminated by a variety of artificial light sources; the resulting photographs achieve color combinations unlike any in the natural world. These oddly colored, empty streets--her works are usually devoid of people--convey a sense of emptiness and loneliness that is nevertheless seductive.
