Leroy W. Flint began his career as a travelling artist for the New Deal Federal Art Project. Through this program, he moved across the country creating murals and other projects that provided art for the public and gave him a job during the Great Depression. Following his work for the FAP, Flint became a teacher and later a director at the Akron Art Institute (now the Akron Art Museum). His early prints are recognized across the country for depicting a realistic yet satirical representation of everyday life during the Depression, while his later modernist paintings are regarded as his best work. This painting, Carnival, suggests a lively circus scene through abstract shapes and colorful lines, highlighting Flint’s skill in abstraction and his transition away from realism.
