More Information

Although she usually traveled on assignment for magazines, Bourke-White went to Russia at her own expense and risk. The Russians, impressed by her photographs, allowed her to go where no other Westerners had been. She returned with heroicizing portraits of the workers and factories of a country struggling to transform itself from a manual, agricultural society into a modern industrial nation.
