At first glance this appears to be a simple portrait, though further examination reveals vaguely unnatural qualities in the child depicted. The artist refers to the works in this series as “illustrations of childhood.” Lux, trained as a traditional painter, carefully staged shots of the children in her studio before combining them with images of her hand-painted backgrounds. She used current digital tools to heighten her vision, accentuating her models’ pale skin, enlarging their heads and eyes and softening the quality of light. The subtle digital manipulation results in uncanny images of figures waiting, frozen in her imagined rooms.
