More Information

Blast furnaces and outbuildings of a steel mill nestle along the banks of a river in this image that probably represents the hilly areas around Pittsburg or southern Ohio. Encouraged by art critics to highlight the Midwest's expanding industrial economy, Gaertner and other Ohio artists were challenged by how to treat these new subjects. Gaertner often made his industrial scenes more picturesque by depicting the sites covered with snow and incorporating rich jewel tones.
