Eaton is best known for his images of white pine forests in central New England, a series to which this work belongs. Here, the painter silhouetted a group of trees against a warm twilight sky, transforming their shape into a beautiful decorative pattern. This may reflect Eaton’s knowledge of Asian art, which profoundly influenced many American artists around the turn of the last century.
