More Information

When we think of a painting of a beautiful winter landscape, blindingly white snow beneath a vivid blue sky may come to mind. The cloudy winter skies of Northeast Ohio offer a beauty of a different sort. A Winter Fog . . . by Leroy Flint perfectly captures one of those days when the sun, low in the sky, filters through the mist just enough to cast shadows and brighten the snow. Flint’s goal for his art to evoke in the viewer the same response he felt as he stood before a scene. This foggy park bordered by rows of modest homes (probably located in Akron, Cuyahoga Falls or Kent) aroused in Flint an appreciation of the muted elegance of a gray day. A deft figurative artist throughout the 1930s, by the 1950s Flint had become an early missionary in the region for abstract painting. But in his later years, he returned to representational painting. Beacon Journal art critic Dorothy Shinn writes in a 1979 review that Flint’s work in the 1970s “achieved a freshness and a contemplative nature” not seen in his earlier paintings, qualities evident in this lovely landscape.
