When Calvin was in Akron, she often painted with fellow members of the Women’s Art League Edith and Ethel Harpham and Gertrude Seiberling. Calvin, an intrepid traveler, spent her vacations abroad seeking new vistas to paint. She traveled alone on painting trips to rural locations in Mexico and Guatemala starting in the 1930s, also painting in Europe and California. This watercolor shows Cantel, a village located at an altitude of around 7,700 feet in the Quetzaltenango Department in the southwest of Guatemala. The town contains the small Mayan archaeological site of Chojolom.
