More Information

A pioneer of large-scale color photography in the 1970s, Richard Misrach has created several multi-year serial projects. Over the course of three years, Misrach repeatedly photographed the Golden Gate Bridge from his front porch in Berkeley, California. Using a telephoto lens, he composed a view from 13 miles across the bay that emphasizes a wide expanse of sky. Within this constant composition, in which the bridge acts as an anchor, seasons, weather and time of day create entirely new effects in each photograph. In Golden Gate Bridge 3/20/00 4:05–5:00AM, the title indicates the extended exposure time necessary to record the scene at night.
