An undergraduate theater and photography major, Barry Underwood uses his experience in set design to create fantastic landscape images. Inspired by sources ranging from pioneering conservation advocate John Muir to contemporary Land Art, Underwood makes temporary installations in natural settings with biodegradable and recyclable materials. Underwood realizes much of his work during artist residencies in rural environments—here, near Interlochen, Michigan. Both scenes were achieved by setting up glow sticks underwater and in balloons. Underwood’s nighttime compositions require two- to three-hour exposures and their tonal range is enriched by the platinum palladium printing process.
