In 2007, Meyerowitz was commissioned by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to document the city’s parks. To accomplish this, Meyerowitz traversed over 29,000 acres of park land across all seasons. The culmination of the project resulted in the publication Legacy: The Preservation of Wilderness in New York City Parks, produced in 2009 by Aperture books. Forest Park, Pine Forest, is from this project and depicts Forest Park in Queens, New York. As described by Monica Racic in the New Yorker, Meyerowitz’s pictures of green spaces nestled within the concrete jungle “implores the viewer to breathe in the scents of the outdoors, relish in the sanctuary of these spaces, and reflect on the true underlying bloodline of New York City: the roots and rivers that came before the subway lines and skyscrapers.” Meyerowitz’s image of Forest Park is meditative, and captures a serene summertime moment that sharply contrasts with one’s impression of a loud, cacophonic city.
