Like many Ohio artists in the early twentieth century, Wilhelm began his career as a commercial artist, including a stint as a graphic designer for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. This vibrant, impressionistic image reflects the fine art skills he developed and shared with students at his art schools in Cuyahoga Falls and Gloucester, Massachusetts. In 1922, in direct response to the population boom in Akron, the bridge that crossed the Little Cuyahoga River valley and connected North Hill with downtown was completed. The North Hill “viaduct” quickly became a landmark of the city and was frequently reproduced in postcards. The viaduct deteriorated over the years and was replaced by the steel All-America “Y” bridge in 1980.
