This drawing is a self-portrait of the artist William Sommer, drawing in his studio. Notably, the artist is wearing a winter hat, as his studio in rural Summit County had no heating. There is damage diagonally across the lower part of the image, most likely indicating that the paper has been folded. This is not significant damage and can likely be repaired by a conservator or Museum staff. The donor, Thomas French, holds a large collection of works on paper by a variety of artists, most significantly William Sommer and George Bellows. This donation would be in honor of his neighbor, Lisa Chong Vogelsong (1948–2024).
