While the Brownshirts were the German SA, the Blackshirts were the paramilitary group organized by Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) to support his Fascist movement in Italy. The montage’s title plays off a proverbial German saying “Like brothers, like caps,” which is similar to “like father, like son” or “birds of a feather flock together.” Rudolf Hess (1894-1987) became deputy leader of the Nazi Party in April 1933. The Nazi shown in the image, however, is Julius Streicher (1885-1946), founder and editor of the anti-Semitic Nazi newspaper The Attacker.
