Stephen Tomasko’s series Winter Was Hard features thoughtfully-composed, energetic images of flowering plants in spring bloom. Attempting to create photographs that are as much landscape paintings as they are straight photography, Tomasko imbues his work with a quality that is simultaneously decorative yet realistic, artificial yet lifelike. He has said that these images are intended as “photographic challenges to the senses”.
