Inspired by the woodblock prints of 18th and 19th century Japanese artist Hokusai, Stephen Tomasko has sought to capture the essence of springtime in Ohio in his photographic series Winter Was Hard. These brilliantly-colored and lively images of flowering plants in bloom show the revitalization of a world previously subdued by a long and brutal Midwestern winter. Hoping his work can likewise revitalize the tired practice of floral photography, Tomasko carefully sets up and lights each shot, creating animated compositions that encourages movement of the eye.
